5 Must-Try Foods in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is rich in culture, beaches and friendly people. However, not many are aware of the wonderful cuisine that the Caribbean island offers. These are five of the most popular Dominican dishes.

The Dominican Republic is rich in culture, beaches and friendly people. However, not many associate its culinary delicacies with a reason to visit the country. Granted, these foods are not all they eat or something they eat every day, but they are the most popular amongst tourists and they are, in fact, traditional foods from the place. A mixture of African, Spanish and indigenous Taino come together to create these delicacies. Probably the most popular of the traditional cuisine (and considered the national dish), this meaty stew has different types of meat from different types of animals, all mixed in with vegetables for a uniquely and wonderful stew.

Kipes

Kipes is the Domincan version of the Middle Eastern kibbeh. The rolls – which are crispy and obviously very yummy – are stuffed with delicious meats and, of course, a bit of spice to make it even more interesting.

Yucca Empanadas

If you haven’t tried yucca, you need to get your hands on some. Preferably in the form of delicious fried dough empanadas. Whether they are filled with cheese, chicken or meat (or a mixture of the three!) these Dominican yummies will have you craving seconds.

Mangú

Mangú is a third part of the famous Los Tres Golpes breakfast food in Dominican Republic. It is a dish made of mashed plantains. When served alongside eggs, salami and fried cheese, it forms the breakfast – sometimes dinner – dish which translates to The Three Strikes.

Fried plantains are a popular dish in the Caribbean island that can be served in many ways (see: mangú). However, the most popular dish is the locally known tostones. These friend plantains are smashed to simulate a type of flat cracker or tortilla and are usually a side dish to basically any meal.
